Old news or explosive insider story? Meta tries to stop ex-employee from promoting her book about Facebook, released this week
This week, former Facebook employee Sarah Wynn-Williams' memoir, in which she accuses the company of misconduct and harassment, as well as Mark Zuckerberg’s attempts to move Facebook to China, went on sale. Following the book’s announcement last week, Meta launched a massive PR campaign and filed a lawsuit with an arbitrator who sided with the company. The arbitrator said the author must stop selling and promoting the book.

Sarah Wynn-Williams was fired in 2017. Eight years later, the former Facebook employee released a book called Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism. In her memoir, the author reveals some new details about how Mark Zuckerberg tried to take Facebook into China a decade ago. She talks about sexual harassment, including from Meta’s current global communications director Joel Kaplan, who was her boss. She also reveals embarrassing details about Zuckerberg’s meetings with world leaders.
The book was announced just last week, and Meta has waged a massive PR campaign against it, calling it «a new book of old news.» Many former employees have publicly disputed Wynn-Williams’ account of events that occurred while she worked at Facebook, Engadget reports .
In her ruling, the arbitrator said she must immediately stop making disparaging comments about Meta and stop «further publication or distribution» of the book. It’s unclear what exactly that means for the book, which is already on sale. The book’s publisher, Flatiron Books, which called it an «explosive inside story,» is also named in Meta’s complaint.
However, it is unclear whether this arbitrator has the authority to stop the book from being published, or whether Wynne-Williams can stop future versions from being made; at the time of this writing, the book is already on sale at stores like Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
«This decision confirms that Sarah Wynn Williams’ false and defamatory book should never have been published,» Meta spokesman Andy Stone said in a statement. «This urgent legal action was necessary because Williams, more than eight years after she was terminated by the company, deliberately concealed the existence of her book project and evaded the standard fact-checking process in order to quickly shelve it after eight years of waiting.»
