Meta said today that it has paused hiring for its new artificial intelligence division, ending a wave of high-profile spending on highly paid AI researchers and engineers.
The company's decision came into effect last week, CNBC reports , along with the reorganization of its new AI division, Superintelligence Labs, which was divided into 4 groups .
A Meta spokesperson said the suspension was “simple organizational planning: creating a solid structure for our new superintelligence efforts after hiring people and conducting annual budget and planning work.”
Mark Zuckerberg wants to create artificial intelligence that surpasses human intelligence. In an effort to achieve this goal, Meta has been spending heavily on artificial intelligence this year. In particular, the company has tried to lure the best AI specialists with signing bonuses that, according to some reports, reached $100 million .
One of Meta's most aggressive moves was to bring in Alexander Wang, founder of Scale AI , in a $14.3 billion deal for a 49% stake in the artificial intelligence startup.
Meta's sudden pause in hiring AI specialists comes amid growing concerns that AI investment is moving too fast, as well as a general sell-off in US tech stocks this week.
