According to CNN, this is the company’s attempt to reduce staff while simultaneously increasing investments in artificial intelligence.
The new pension program, implemented for the first time in the company, will be available to all employees whose age and cumulative service experience together amount to 70 years or more.
The publication notes that Microsoft, like other technology companies, is investing heavily in AI infrastructure and tools. In the last quarter of 2025, for example, the company spent $37.5 billion on such goals.
CNN also reminds that the voluntary retirement program was launched after Microsoft laid off about 9,000 employees last summer, which was the largest reduction since 2023.
Meanwhile, as we wrote, a top Microsoft manager believes that AI agents need to purchase software licenses on an equal basis with humans.
