Microsoft lures 20 AI experts from Google DeepMind

Another reshuffle of employees between major tech companies in the field of artificial intelligence is turning the competition into a real battle royal.
Microsoft has poached more than 20 employees from Google's DeepMind research unit. One of the latest high-profile moves was the transfer of Amar Subramanian, the former head of engineering for the Gemini chatbot from Google, to Microsoft. He announced this on his LinkedIn profile, noting that he is becoming corporate vice president of AI.
Subramanya will join other former DeepMind employees, including chief engineer Sonal Gupta, software engineer Adam Sadowski and product manager Tim Frank. According to sources familiar with the matter, Microsoft has convinced at least 24 people to join its team in the past six months.
AI hiring has been particularly active since DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleiman was named head of Microsoft’s consumer AI strategy in March, the result of an “acqui-hire,” in which Microsoft paid $650 million to license the technology and hire most of the team from his startup Inflection.
Late last year, Suleiman also poached Dominic King and Christopher Kelly from DeepMind, who now lead Microsoft’s new AI Medicine division, which has already developed an AI-powered medical system that they say is four times more effective than human doctors at diagnosing complex diseases.
The personnel changes come amid growing competition from large companies like OpenAI and Meta .
