Microsoft launches GitHub Copilot exam-free certification system. How will it work?

Microsoft has launched a new GitHub Copilot proficiency certification system called Pro Badge. It will assess your level of Copilot proficiency based on how you use the AI assistant in your daily work. The system will also assess your level of proficiency, which can increase or decrease over time.

This is reported by Microsoft.

The company explains that developers have long asked for an easier way to prove their skills. After all, to get a traditional certificate, you have to separately prepare for the exam, even if you work with this tool every day.

To get a badge, you need to go to GitHub Learn, log in with your personal GitHub account, and agree to the assessment. Then you can simply continue working. A special system will analyze how a person uses Copilot: whether they use its various functions, whether they know how to select AI models for their tasks, configure the assistant, and work with it on different projects.

The company assures that the system will not review the code itself, requests to the AI, and other work materials, but will only use data on how a person uses Copilot's capabilities for evaluation.

Microsoft has envisioned five levels of Copilot proficiency, but only three are available so far:

  • Beginner — the developer knows what Copilot is and is just starting to get acquainted with its capabilities.

  • Intermediate (middle level) - already familiar with the basic functions, knows about the settings and possibilities of working with various AI models.

  • Proficient (confident user) — regularly uses Copilot in real projects, knows how to choose appropriate models and adapt the tool to specific needs.

To get the Pro Badge, you need to reach level three. Microsoft plans to add two more levels later, Advanced and Expert.

In addition, the level obtained is not fixed for the developer forever. The system will continue to evaluate his work, so over time the level may not only increase, but also decrease. For example, if a person stops using certain Copilot features.

The assessment result will only be visible to the user. But if they want to show off their skills to employers, they can earn a digital badge and add it to LinkedIn.

So far, you can only get this award for working with GitHub Copilot, but Microsoft plans to introduce it for other products in the future.

Previously, dev.ua wrote about the certification from Anthropic, which was launched for specialists in the development of AI systems. In the article, Ukrainian developer from EPAM Vladislav Babenko told how such testing was carried out and why the real exam turned out to be more difficult than the training ones.
