“Learn embedded and be an orchestra person.” A full-stack developer asked how to move to MilTech — here’s what she was advised
A Ukrainian full-stack developer named Anna, who goes by the nickname 50.shades.of.autumn, asked Threads how to transition to miltech. She noted that she has a technical education, full-stack development experience, FPV drone soldering skills, flight experience, and certification, and asked for recommendations for courses or internships with job prospects.
In response, the developer received dozens of practical recommendations — from switching to embedded Linux to working in combat R&D teams.
One of the most specific pieces of advice was given by user serbrantirum: «The closest thing you can probably get is embedded Linux development. I’m currently looking for a job in this area — there are a lot of offers in this area, and it wouldn’t be too difficult for a developer with full-stack experience to get into it.»
Another non-standard option was suggested by alexvkod — mobilization directly into combat R&D. «Maybe there is a desire to mobilize into a laboratory in a marine brigade? RnD, testing solutions in combat conditions,» he wrote.
The specifics of working in the industry were noted by a user with the nickname stouneua, who described miltech as an environment of rapid adaptation: «Being prepared to be a human orchestra and that your previous skills may not be needed.»
Among the educational routes, the community recommended the embedded program from Beetroot Academy. Representatives of the academy noted that they cooperate with companies that hire DefTech specialists, and also invited to a free webinar on embedded development.
A more practical path was suggested by lidashyhymyha, who recommended Vyriy Tech School and courses on assembling FPV drones.
Some commentators emphasized that entry into miltech often occurs through professional contacts, rather than classic hiring. In particular, pidsnizhnykk advised looking for vacancies through Lobby X, djinny_jane — through Djinni, and illia_career drew attention to over a thousand vacancies in the DefTech section of DOU.
The discussion showed the main trend of the Ukrainian miltech market in 2026: a full-stack background is no longer a limitation for entering the industry, but employers increasingly expect readiness to transition to embedded, work at the interface of software and hardware, and quickly adapt to tasks that change literally every week.
