The Ukrainian Defense Forces are actively using high-speed drones equipped with artificial intelligence technology, writes The Wall Street Journal.
This year, autonomous “killer robots” capable of carrying out combat missions without direct human intervention are expected to appear on the front lines. Despite this, maintaining operator control, consistent with global safety standards, remains a priority.
Ukrainian companies are introducing innovations that allow operators to work with minimal technical skills. Drones with automatic targeting have already proven their effectiveness, including in the fight against Russian electronic warfare systems.
“We are moving gradually, adapting technologies to mass production only after confirming their practical benefits,” said Max Makarchuk, head of the AI department at Brave1.
As noted, in 2024, Ukraine produced over a million small drones, most of which are FPV drones capable of delivering explosives up to 20 km away. To counter Russian electronic interference, Ukrainian engineers have developed navigation modules that work without GPS and multi-frequency communication channels.
These innovations allow one operator to control several drones simultaneously, significantly increasing the effectiveness of combat operations. “Everything we do here is aimed at reducing the qualification requirements for users,” said Andriy Chulyk, co-founder of the startup Sine, which develops solutions for electronic warfare.
