Thousands of users have complained on social media that they were unable to purchase Hollow Knight: Silksong on the Steam store after its release on September 4th due to technical difficulties. Similar problems were noted on other stores where the game was released.
Hollow Knight: Silksong is the sequel to the hugely successful metroidvania Hollow Knight, which was released in 2017 and sold over 15 million copies. Silksong was originally planned as DLC for the original Hollow Knight, but the project grew over time and in 2019, studio Team Cherry announced that it would release it as a standalone project.
Hollow Knight: Silksong has been in development for six and a half years, with the developers sharing fewer and fewer details about the project. This has led to numerous memes about the game’s anticipation, and many fans have begun to doubt that Silksong will ever be released.

However, in August, Team Cherry announced that the game would be released soon. In an interview with journalist Jason Schreier, the creators of Silksong said that despite numerous rumors, the development of the game did not encounter any problems. They simply created it without overtime for «their own pleasure.»
«We never got stuck. Progress was constant. We’re just a small team, and game development takes a lot of time. There were no big arguments behind it,» Team Cherry noted.
The game had nearly 5 million wishlist additions before release, and over 500,000 players played the game on Steam alone upon launch. Meanwhile, the number of user reports of crashes on Downdetector increased sharply after the game’s release, peaking at 3,750, before gradually decreasing over the next hour.
Another digital store, Humble Bundle, announced that Hollow Knight: Silksong was temporarily unavailable due to high demand. The situation prompted Hollow Knight composer Christopher Larkin to joke that Silksong «broke the internet».
