"I have a basic interview fee of $2,000. I work only on a subscription basis." The candidate asked to pay for his participation in the interview, setting a hefty fee. Discussion with 90+ comments

«The market seems to have surprised me again and made me smile. I received a case from a colleague (I’m publishing it with permission). Even before any call and „tell me more about the vacancy and the company,“ the candidate sets out the conditions: „$2,000. 100% down payment. I only work with serious companies.“ And it seems like nothing special — just an interview at the „luxury“ rate. The candidate has, so to speak, his own vision. But what about cooperation, where the only „account“ is openness, trust, and common sense?» she asks .
The expert added a screenshot of the correspondence with the candidate.
According to Anna, when the initial price of a dialogue is similar to a business class fare, the question arises: is this confidence or armor?
In the comments to the post, there are over 90 comments and over 2 hundred reactions.
Supply Chain and management consultant Anna Romanyshyna said that in the UK and Ireland, C-level candidates are paid for interviews. «At the beginning of the war, I moved to Europe and went through such interviews, and I was surprised when HR asked me about my bank details on the phone. But the fee was 100 pounds sterling, not $2,000. At the time, it was a miracle. Now I am increasingly inclined to believe that it is necessary to charge for the time spent on interviews, because they often turn into consulting on the company’s case,» she said.
«In the conditions of the modern market, in situations where a candidate is interviewed and then given (if given at all) an answer like „We… (substitute anything, because, as you know, everything that comes before 'but' has no meaning), but decided to move on with other candidates“, and even experienced specialists cannot find a job for months, the norm no longer seems so seditious. In simple words: „Ok, you can make any decision regarding the selection of candidates, but pay for my time, which I can potentially spend for nothing“. This is the same as payment (yes, minimal, contractual, but payment!) for test tasks — honest market relations: the candidate spent time on the task, and regardless of the result of receiving/not receiving the offer, his time was paid for», — notes Frontend Developer Greg Terekhov .
Co-founder of Ambi Studio Artem Snitko notes that it would be interesting to get statistics on employers: how many companies agree to the conditions of this seeker. «On the other hand, with such fees for participating in interviews, you may never work,» he believes.
«I’m doing something wrong in my life!», writes HRD Anna Oleinikova .
Kateryna Bondarenko, QA Engineer, says that she has seen situations where an offer was made and then withdrawn more than once. «In conditions where candidates go through three rounds of selection, his price for an interview does not seem strange, a little expensive, of course, but he will spend his time, and he appreciates it,» she added.
Lyudmila Pivtoratska, HRD, believes that considering that there are a lot of companies that invite experienced candidates to interviews for free consultations, it is quite fair to make them not free.
«Friends, in another world, things are a little different. A recruiter can get up to $10,000 for a candidate in the Western market, and for top managers there are special headhunters who conduct almost special operations in industrial espionage and social engineering in order to lure a working specialist to another company. So it is probably surprising that we are so little interested in the peculiarities of other labor markets. It is also surprising for many that a resume with your photo (unless you are a photo model) in 99% of cases immediately goes into the trash, without being considered in the USA, and in Sweden the situation is similar with a resume with a Middle Eastern surname,» says Alex Korchenko, DevOps engineer.
Dmytro Savytskyi, International Developer, believes that the candidate’s position is correct, although it is formulated with adolescent directness. «I have repeatedly encountered attempts by „employers“ to turn an interview into a consultation. These tricks are immediately visible. There was a funny situation — at an interview with a „big“ developer (the entire Internet is flooded with their advertising). I flatly refused to provide a consultation. The following dialogue took place: Company representative: „Tell me now, because it might be too late.“ Me: Yes, but it will be too late for you. „Charity“ organizations are especially manipulating this. Don’t believe all these representatives of international organizations. Your relatives or acquaintances will get the job anyway.»
«I didn’t send the task to anyone, you can delete it from the chat, but keep it just in case.» Aitivets was rejected by a potential employer because he asked to pay for the test task. The community is discussing
