32% of senior developers say half of their code is written with AI — twice as many as juniors

Fastly, a leading American technology company specializing in cloud computing solutions, surveyed 791 developers, TechSpot writes .

32% of IT professionals surveyed with more than 10 years of experience reported that 50% of their code was created using AI. This figure is significantly lower among junior professionals with two years of experience or less, at 13%.

The study also found that the expected speed of working with AI does not always correspond to reality. 28% of developers admit that they spend so much time fixing AI code that all the time savings are lost. At the same time, 14% of respondents hardly need any significant changes.

However, more than half of all participants reported that AI tools, including GitHub Copilot, Google Gemini, and Anthropic Claude, helped them work faster. Senior engineers were more enthusiastic: 59% said AI had made them work faster, compared to 49% of junior developers.

Senior developers were also twice as likely to report significant time savings, although they said they spent more effort fixing AI bugs.

The difference between juniors and seniors can be explained not by desire but by experience. Just over half of junior developers reported that AI had moderately accelerated their work, compared to 39% of experienced professionals.

At the same time, one in four senior developers said that AI significantly accelerated them, which is twice as much as among their younger colleagues.

The likely reason for this, according to Fastly, lies in experience. Seniors are quicker to spot hidden errors in code. Their expertise allows them to distinguish when the generated AI code looks perfect but doesn’t work properly. Thanks to this, they fix the flaws much more efficiently, without losing productivity.
