"This is not a crooked spam. This is a well-thought-out scheme." Marketer warns of Telegram phishing targeting birthday people
It seems that a new fraudulent account theft scheme has appeared on Telegram, targeting birthday people, even if the date of birth is not specified. It is likely that the attackers are using merged databases to send personalized "congratulations" on the user’s birthday. Marketing Team Lead Oleksandr Sukhomlyn came across such a phishing scheme and used AI to investigate how it works.

Marketing Team Lead Oleksandr Sukhomlyn came across such a phishing scheme and used AI to investigate how it works.
According to the specialist, in the morning he received a message from the Telegram channel "Happy Birthday" with the messenger’s logo, a greeting image, and an offer to activate three months of Telegram Premium subscription for free within 24 hours.
"Honestly? I was already reaching for the button. The offer is nice. The day coincided. Everything looks as it should. And then it stopped. Stop. My birthday is not listed in Telegram. How do they know? And at the top it says "Report spam and exit". The official Telegram chat doesn’t look like that," Sukhomlyn shared on LinkedIn.
The marketer did not follow the link, but with the help of artificial intelligence Claude analyzed the phishing site (telegram-prems,com). It turned out that after clicking the activation button, the resource asks for a phone number, a confirmation code from Telegram and a cloud password (two-step authentication). If this data is entered, the victim completely loses access to their account along with correspondence and contacts, after which the account is used to send spam or extort ransom.
Oleksandr Sukhomlyn highlighted several key features that indicate a high level of training of fraudsters:
date of birth is taken from merged databases by phone number;
victims receive a unique link;
the text on the phishing page is intentionally "broken" with invisible symbols;
the bot periodically deletes and resends messages to keep the chat at the top of the list;
Limiting the activation time to 24 hours encourages rash actions.
"So this is not crooked spam. This is a well-thought-out scheme. And it works exactly when you are relaxed and happy with the greeting… Even if the offer is pleasant and everything matches, stop for a second. Look at who is writing and where the link leads. Do not enter codes and passwords on third-party sites," the specialist concluded.
