As Bloomberg reports, Nvidia is partnering with Nokia Oyj, SoftBank Group Corp. and T-Mobile US Inc., which are committing to building sixth-generation networks based on computers and software capable of using AI for «secure and efficient radio communications management».
Nvidia explains that this is necessary for the many devices that will be connected to networks in the future and their more complex requirements. 5G technology was designed to connect people using voice and data and provide them with the information they receive. It is not capable of supporting the widespread use of artificial intelligence, Nvidia said.
«Today’s networks are simply not ready for the future. In the age of artificial intelligence, everything is changing. Networks will provide intelligent services not only to people on their phones, but also to machines,» said Ronnie Vasishta, who heads Nvidia’s telecommunications business and strategy.
He said telecommunications networks will need «hundreds of thousands of times» more efficiency because there is not enough radio spectrum to support new uses.
Nvidia is interested in 6G because it is at the center of the AI boom with its chips. So it is trying to conquer a new market and remove potential barriers. The company needs to spread AI to other areas, such as robots and vehicles, to continue to drive demand and pay for data centers, which are currently the biggest consumers of its technology.
Nvidia says that new hardware and software for 6G should be fundamentally open. Instead of closed devices with specialized hardware, the radios that send and receive wireless traffic should be controlled by updatable software that runs on general-purpose computers.
The idea is for data traffic to be routed by artificial intelligence software that can respond to rapidly changing patterns and priorities in a way that is simply not possible today, the company says. This will spur the emergence of new telecom providers.
