According to Reuters, the deal provides that Nvidia will receive a stake in OpenAI — but will not have voting rights. In turn, OpenAI will use the investment to purchase Nvidia equipment, including for data centers, which the tech giant will supply.
The companies have signed a letter of intent to deploy at least 10 GW of Nvidia computing power for OpenAI by 2026. This is equivalent to the energy consumption of more than eight million American households.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized that computing resources will be the foundation of the economy of the future, and the partnership with Nvidia will allow OpenAI to accelerate breakthroughs in AI and scale them for business and society.
OpenAI is currently valued at $500 billion. Nvidia will start with a $10 billion investment, with first deliveries expected in the second half of 2026 on the new Vera Rubin platform.
Analysts note that the cooperation strengthens Nvidia's position in the market, but raises questions about competition. In fact, Nvidia's money through the investment may actually flow back to the company in the form of purchases of its own chips.
Nvidia recently announced the acquisition of Intel shares worth $5 billion and plans to jointly develop “multiple generations of specialized products for data centers and PCs.” This will help the companies compete with AMD in the processor market.
Among the broader implications is the intensifying race in AI computing. Microsoft has already invested billions in OpenAI since 2019, and Nvidia recently announced a collaboration with Intel. In parallel, OpenAI is working to create its own chips with Broadcom and TSMC, in order to reduce its dependence on Nvidia in the future.
