The verification process, called Verified Organization, is "a new way for developers to unlock access to the most advanced models and capabilities of the OpenAI platform," according to a message that appeared on the company's page the other day.
Verification requires an ID issued by the government of one of the countries that supports OpenAI’s API. The ID can only verify one organization every 90 days, and not all organizations will be eligible for verification, OpenAI said.
“At OpenAI, we take our responsibility to ensure that AI is widely accessible and used safely seriously,” the page says. “Unfortunately, a small minority of developers intentionally use OpenAI APIs in violation of our usage policies. We are adding a review process to reduce unsafe uses of AI while continuing to provide cutting-edge models to a broad range of developers.”
OpenAI has launched the new Verified Organization status as a new way for developers to unlock access to the platform’s most advanced models and capabilities, and be ready for “the next exciting model release,” TechCrunch reports . Verification will take a few minutes.
The new review process could be aimed at strengthening the security of OpenAI’s products as they become increasingly complex and powerful. The company has published several reports on its efforts to detect and prevent malicious use of its models, including by groups alleged to be based in North Korea.
Recently, dev.ua reported that spammers were using OpenAI's API to create unique messages , allowing them to bypass spam detection filters and send fraudulent emails to over 80,000 websites in four months.
The move could also be aimed at preventing intellectual property theft. Earlier this year, OpenAI was investigating whether a group linked to DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial intelligence lab, had stolen large amounts of data through its API in late 2024, possibly to train models, in violation of OpenAI’s terms of service. The company blocked access to its services in China last summer.
