OpenAI introduced Workspace Agents — autonomous AI agents that can work in work tools like Slack or Google Drive
OpenAI has announced the launch of Workspace Agents in ChatGPT, a new phase in the development of GPT agents, which are now able to autonomously and collaboratively perform complex, long-running workflows. Unlike standard chatbots, these agents run in the cloud using the Codex model, allowing them to continue performing tasks in the background even when the user has closed the browser tab or is offline.
Workspace Agents are designed to solve the problem of knowledge fragmentation and bureaucratization of processes within organizations. Now the team can configure the agent logic once, connect it to corporate databases and use it as a full-fledged virtual colleague in the ChatGPT interface or directly in Slack work channels. With access to files, code and long-term memory, agents collect context from different systems, independently plan a sequence of actions and ensure the transfer of results between different tools without human involvement at each stage.
«Describe the task or simply upload a file. ChatGPT will help turn it into an agent: define the steps, connect the necessary tools, add skills, and test it until it works as you expect,» OpenAI says.
The developers provide examples of how agents can enhance the work of departments:
IT and development: technical review automation. The agent can independently review employee software requests, check them for compliance with internal security policies, and automatically generate tickets to the IT department.
Product Management: Intelligent Feedback Monitoring. AI monitors messages in Slack and public forums, analyzes sentiment, and independently creates priority tasks for developers based on frequent complaints or user requests.
Sales and Marketing: Full cycle of work with leads. The agent is able to research potential clients, evaluate them according to internal qualification criteria and prepare personalized letters, which significantly reduces the time for «cold» communication.
Finance and Accounting: Reporting automation. For example, OpenAI’s accounting team already uses an agent to prepare for month-end closing—from postings to balance sheet reconciliations, which usually take days, now take minutes.
«Agents don’t just respond to a request: they can write and execute code, use connected applications, and proactively act within the limits of set permissions,» OpenAI explains the benefits of moving from passive chats to proactive agent systems.
Separately, there is the possibility of setting schedules according to which the AI will independently collect data or send updates on Fridays.
The feature is currently available in research preview for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Teachers subscribers. OpenAI said that existing GPT models will remain available, but the developers plan to make it easier to convert them into more powerful Workspace Agents in the near future.
Google also introduced Workspace Intelligence, a Gemini-based AI system that automates work in the company’s popular office services. The new tools will allow users to create spreadsheets faster, generate texts in Google Docs, and analyze data from Drive, Mail, and Calendar.
