OpenAI releases its AI browser Atlas. Shares of parent company Google have already reacted by falling

OpenAI has released its artificial intelligence-based web browser called Atlas.

The company introduced the browser’s functionality in a live broadcast after a previous mysterious announcement that appeared a little earlier.

«This is an AI-powered web browser built on ChatGPT,» OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said during the broadcast.

ChatGPT Atlas is already available globally on macOS, while Windows, iOS, and Android access is «coming soon.» However, its «agent mode» is currently only available to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users, Altman said.

What is «agent mode»?

Adam Fry, product manager at ChatGPT Search, explained that one of the best features of the browser is the memory, which makes the browser «more personalized,» as well as the agent mode, which means «in Atlas, ChatGPT can now perform actions for you.»

According to Fry, the browser will be able to help the user book tickets for an event or a flight, or even edit a document you are working on. OpenAI representatives added that users will be able to manage the browser’s «memory» in the settings.

The Verge explains that the browser’s agent mode is based on OpenAI’s previous attempts at agent-based AI, such as the Operator tool.

This was an early version of the tool, allowing ChatGPT to use a computer on behalf of a user, while ChatGPT Agent is the next iteration, which was designed to perform more complex tasks — such as making purchases.

How much did Google shares fall?

According to CNBC, shares of Google’s parent company, Alphabet, immediately fell 3% on Tuesday after OpenAI announced the launch of ChatGPT Atlas.

Google shares later continued to fall and fell by as much as 4,8% after this news.
