OpenAI told investors it expects to generate $2.5 billion in advertising revenue by the end of 2026 and a staggering $53 billion by 2029, Futurism reports . And by 2030, the company predicts that figure will double to $100 billion, surpassing the revenue of giants like Tesla and Disney.
These projections are based on the assumption that by 2030, the number of weekly OpenAI users will reach 2.75 billion. As of February, this figure is 900 million.
Google generates hundreds of billions of dollars in advertising revenue each year by collecting vast amounts of user data, which it uses to serve a vast array of ads. As more people turn to AI chatbots for answers rather than search engines, ChatGPT advertising could become even more effective. It will rely on long conversations between users, in which they are likely to express their desires, either directly or in a veiled manner.
But it can come at a high price. Advertising has already caused controversy among ChatGPT users — and it’s a sore point that competitor Anthropic has played on. In a series of Super Bowl commercials, they emphasized that their chatbot, Claude, would remain ad-free.
