"It was good before. You make your own Windows in Pascal, add it as an operating system to a floppy disk according to instructions from a hacker magazine, and you're cool." IT people's stories about their very first OS

Team Lead Yevhen Turovets told on LinkedIn how he installed his very first operating system. When he was 6 years old, he accidentally deleted Windows with everything on his hard drive. To avoid a «strap» from his father, he took the book Windows for Dummies and installed the system from scratch himself — and it was by pictures, because at that time he did not know English.

«Do you remember your first operating system?» — this is the question asked by Yevhen Turovets on LinkedIn, after telling his own story.

Dmitry Radionov, CSO at Vidby: «The first system was MS DOS, then I installed FreeDOS (it was all from 1988, first at my father’s place of work, then in 1994 I bought my own computer). 386DX 2Mb of memory. Dum wouldn’t start on it. Then I saved up my money, bought another 2 MB on Kardach. Then of course there was Windows, I installed Windows NT, then in 1999 I installed Red Hat Linux (the disk was included in some computer magazine), in parallel with Windows. Since then, I am a million percent sure that all OSes from MS are a rare g…. At work I was forced to use Win, but at home exclusively Linux (Red Hat, then Ubuntu, then Mint). Somewhere in 2013 I discovered the MacOS ecosystem for myself. At first I really liked everything, but then they began to decide too much for the user. «Just for fun, I installed Fedora on my MBP 2019 alongside macOS, and so far the results are very good. There were some hardware issues, but I successfully overcame them, thanks to the T2linux resource.»

Oleksandra Smironova, HR Manager: «I was a little older when I first uninstalled Windows, I don’t know how it happened, but my dad told me to „figure it out“ (in practice), and I figured it out. And before that, I remember the first computer games, primitive, but for me they were magic. When none of my classmates had seen a PC yet, I already had one at home… and then DOOM, iddqd, idkfa appeared, and then I would play Quak with the guys online, for some reason the girls weren’t very enthusiastic, it’s strange… nostalgia.»

Kateryna Bakhmat, DevOps Engineer at Uitware: «Windows XP, I was about three years old. My parents got a computer when I was 1.5, but I became interested in it only when I was three. According to my parents, I was already good at using a computer. Somewhere around 11-12 years old, I got acquainted with Linux and virtualization. At this point, the list of operating systems I have tried is large, I am still using Ubuntu.»

Bohdan Pakhomov, DevOps engineer at SoftServe: «The first axis is also XP.
I don’t remember how old I was… There were times when I reinstalled it every day, because after rebooting it would crash. That was something… It took a long time before I found out the reason — a broken hard drive) I tried different Linux distributions… Now I have Ubuntu on OrangePi5, Windows 10 on my home computer and a MacBook (not a fan of Macs, but that’s how it has historically been). I have a dream to install Linux on that OrangePi myself, because now the system there is outdated, the new one doesn’t see the SSD. In a word — I have room to grow.

Serhiy Koptev, Cyber and Network Security: «MS-DOS with the DOS Navigator file manager on a five-inch floppy disk, then Windows 3.11 and the Electronics Workbench program, Windows 95 and SoftICE. And then everything that came out, even Vista and WinME I tried (and immediately deleted).»

Stanislav K., Security Engineering Lead: «The first OS is always special, because it starts the journey. My first was Windows Vista, and then Windows XP. I was 15. And I got acquainted with Windows 3.1, MS DOS, and C++ at university, and it was very interesting.»

Alexey Lukin, React Developer: «It was good before. You make your own Windows in Pascal, add it as an operating system on a floppy disk according to the instructions from Hacker magazine and you’re cool. And now in 5 minutes Lovable can make anyone a clone of Twitter or Facebook and whatnot.»

Roman Kozin, Senior Software Engineer: «Windows XP SP1. The first disassembly of the computer was really cool. And when I replaced 256MB SDRAM with 1GB DDRI, it was something. And the HDD went from 20 to 80.»
