Ukrainian interceptor drone shoots down Shahed jet for the first time
The STING interceptor drone of the Ukrainian company «Wild Hornets» for the first time shot down the Iranian-Russian Shahed 238 jet drone, which has a significantly higher speed than the Shahed 131 and Shahed 136 models.
The STING interceptor drone of the Ukrainian company «Wild Hornets» for the first time shot down the Iranian-Russian Shahed 238 jet drone, which has a significantly higher speed than the Shahed 131 and Shahed 136 models.
The event was reported by blogger, activist, and volunteer Serhiy Sternenko, who called it a historic achievement.
«Tonight, our soldiers shot down several jet fighters for the first time with Ukrainian-made Sting interceptor drones!» Sternenko wrote.
He added that the work was carried out by soldiers of the 1129th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment of Bila Tserkva.
The founder of PetCube and miltech startups TheFourthLaw and Odd Systems, Yaroslav Azhnyuk, also noted that the Sting interceptor drone that shot down the Shahed jet was equipped with a Kurbas-640a camera from Odd Systems.
The Shahed 238 UAV has a jet engine, which significantly increases its speed compared to the Shahed 131 and Shahed 136, whose speed is estimated at about 190 km/h. It is also painted black, probably to reduce the visibility of the drone at night. The model used by the Russian army is called «Geran-3 and the Tolou-10/13 engine, which gives a flight speed of up to 550–600 km/h and a range of 2500 km.
«The Shahed jet is the enemy’s response to the success of our anti-aircraft drones,» noted military expert Sergey «Flash.»
Previously, the CEO of Technari, Gennady Suldin, expressed the opinion that Ukrainian interceptor drones may lose their relevance if the Russians install more powerful engines on the Shahed, because they will not be able to catch up with them.
TheSTING drone was first shown last fall. It became the first drone specifically designed to defeat Iranian Shahed drones launched by the Russians. At the same time, the Sting costs much less than the Russian-Iranian drones and can fly at speeds of more than 160 km per hour and climb to an altitude of about 3 km.
In February, Wild Hornets showed testing of a new version of the Sting drone. It can fly twice as long while maintaining its speed, which has increased to 200 km/h. And in August, the developers accelerated the Sting interceptor drone to over 300 km/h.
