According to insiders, this will be a new version of Apple’s Xcode integrated development environment, which will integrate Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet artificial intelligence model.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple will roll out the software internally and has not yet decided whether to launch it publicly. It notes that Apple is using artificial intelligence to improve internal workflows to speed up and streamline product development.
A similar approach is used by companies like Windsurf and Anysphere, which offer AI-powered coding assistants that are popular among software developers.
Last year, Apple announced its own AI-powered programming tool for Xcode called Swift Assist. The company planned to release it in 2024, but it never shipped it to developers. Inside the company, engineers complained that its own system could cause «hallucinations» and even slow down app development. The partnership with Anthropic could eliminate this problem, as the model is considered one of the best in programming.
Apple’s new tool includes a chat interface where programmers can enter code requests or changes people have suggested. It can also test user interfaces.
Apple now seems more open to partnering with other companies in the AI space, although it has previously tried to develop its own technology. Until now, Apple has shied away from third-party models — except for a deal with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which can answer queries in the virtual assistant Siri.
For Anthropic, working with Apple is a big advantage, especially if the tool is ever rolled out publicly. Anthropic is already working with Amazon to help build the new Alexa+ assistant, but when Apple was in talks to partner with Siri last year, it only seriously considered Google and OpenAI before striking a deal with ChatGPT.
