Nintendo Switch 2 becomes fastest-selling console in history, nearly outselling Steam Deck in three years in four days
Japanese company Nintendo said on Wednesday that it had sold more than 3.5 million Switch 2 consoles in the first four days after launch, making it the fastest-selling gaming device in the company’s history and the video game industry.
Japanese company Nintendo said on Wednesday that it had sold more than 3.5 million Switch 2 consoles in the first four days after launch, making it the fastest-selling gaming device in the company’s history and the video game industry.
Last month, Nintendo predicted that Switch 2 sales would reach 15 million during the current fiscal year, which ends in March 2026. This is reported by The Verge.
Now, Nintendo has announced that it has sold more than 3.5 million Switch 2 consoles in the console’s first four days of sales, surpassing records for any other Nintendo hardware during the same launch period. Analyst Daniel Ahmad also noted that the Switch 2 is the «fastest-selling home video game console of all time».
It took Sony 16 days to sell 2.1 million PS4 consoles, and six weeks to reach 4.2 million consoles. The Switch 2 also comfortably beat the launch of the PS5, which came during the Covid-19 pandemic and chip shortages. It took Sony four weeks to sell 3.4 million consoles, and seven weeks to sell 4.4 million PS5s.
The Switch 2's success also dwarfs its main competitor in the portable gaming market, the Steam Deck. In February of this year, it was reported that Valve managed to sell between 3.7 million and more than 4 million consoles in its first three years, including the updated OLED version.
PC Gamer compared the two laptops and noted that they are «very different devices for very different people».
«When we previously compared the Nintendo Switch to the Steam Deck, the Steam Deck won on library and performance, while the Switch fought back on price and Nintendo exclusives. Now the situation has changed a bit: the Switch 2 is more amazing and more expensive, but again it’s hard to ignore how great the Steam library is, especially considering how cheap the Steam Deck is now,» says gadget reviewer James Bentley.
Analysts believe that the record sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 were made possible by the large pent-up demand for the new console; the company used this time to manufacture enough consoles to meet demand. Nintendo introduced the first Switch back in 2017 and has since sold more than 152 million consoles.
Nintendo has officially unveiled the Switch 2 handheld with games for $80. This could be an attempt to set a new price standard for the gaming industry
