"Is a programmer a profession? Is it still synonymous with success?". IT residents discuss the prospects for work in the IT industry in Threads. The comments are mostly disappointing.

A user with the nickname maximalist14 asked the community: «Is a programmer as a profession everything? Is it still synonymous with success?» Dozens of comments shine a light on the not-so-inspiring mood of IT professionals.

User denis_sarantsev gives the numbers: «Here are djinni’s statistics. As we can see, the mass trend in IT has passed. No one buys shit courses anymore. Everyone? Those who wanted to become an IT professional became one, and the majority dropped out. Therefore, now is a better option for entering the profession than in 2023. And as for neuroscientists, this is the last thing you can worry about. In the next 15-20 years, no one will definitely replace anyone.»

A developer from Dnipro with the nickname sit_beside believes that the IT bubble has burst. «Operating systems for all electronic devices on planet Earth are no longer being created or updated, device drivers have disappeared, cybersecurity has disappeared, blockchain and crypto have dissolved, software for drones, weapons, and defense is over, web development has been annihilated, the auto industry with software for cars has gone out to smoke, video games have died, telephony has ceased to exist, AI is not supported and is not updated. Run away from the village, we are fucked,» he writes.

«These debates have been going on for over 10 years: will programmers be needed in the next 10-15 years? I am convinced that programmers will always be needed. We are all not eternal. And no one has canceled natural selection. Thinking people are always needed. Thinking people + programming — already junior. Add the ability to learn and process information — and already middle. If you are also responsible — senior increases. And if you are not afraid of risk, the unknown and challenges — this is already the level of Jobs and Zuckerberg,» — the user with the nickname sweet_oder_sauer is convinced.

«IT is gradually transforming into ChatGpt dialing operators,» notes developer Dmitry Sinepolsky.

«If you’re talking about AI, then the fact that programmers will become unnecessary is a thing. In economics, there is such a thing as the Jevons paradox — when a technology appears that does something more efficiently, the demand for this thing increases, not decreases. For example, airplanes have become more efficient (less fuel per passenger) and as a result, people fly more often, which ultimately increases the total amount of emissions. AI reduces the cost of code, which means that (programmers) will want more code, not less,» is convinced by user Dima Petrunyak with the nickname siusarna.

«A programmer has never been synonymous with success. This does not mean that you opened VS Code conditionally and money will fall from the sky. And people who copy machine code will always be needed, at least in the war against AI,» adds a user with the nickname banacan_123.

User khrystynkov, who, according to his profile, is a Business Operations Manager Certified Notion, states: «It’s just that requests and tasks are changing. Developers of the Python language, for example, are very important now. AI tools are also created and supported by developers in conjunction with data science, analysts, and engineers. It’s just that you don’t need to code websites, elementary applications, or forms anymore. But in order to even competently do something with AI, you need to have a code base and structure.»
