Russia is coordinating its actions on low-orbit satellite constellations with billionaire and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, as well as other partners from the United States. Vladimir Putin said this, calling the American entrepreneur “a true genius”.
According to Bloomberg, the Kremlin leader said that Moscow maintains contact with Musk to “maintain discipline and order” in orbit so that spacecraft do not interfere with each other. He also added that Russia is proud of developing its own analogue of the Starlink system, called “Rassvet,” and appreciates such cooperation despite political tensions between the countries.
The Rassvet project is a low-Earth orbit broadband satellite network operated by the Russian company Bureau 1440. The first 16 serial devices were launched in March, with the next batch in July. It is stated that the network should begin providing commercial services next year, and by 2035 the constellation should grow to over 900 satellites.
Recall, earlier this month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced restrictions on Ukraine’s access to Starlink services, which are used to protect against Russian attacks. Donald Trump denied giving such an order, while Musk explained this by allegedly violating the terms of use of the system due to UAV strikes. On October 24, the speed limit on the Starlink network for Ukrainian forces was lifted after reports of Trump’s conversation with Musk.
