The 55-year-old game developer's life was cut short by an accident. Zampella worked on such popular game series as Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, Titanfall and Battlefield.
According to media reports, Zampella lost control of his Ferrari 296 GTS, which caught fire after an accident north of Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Mountains. The California Highway Patrol told the publication that the car went off the road and collided with a concrete barrier.
The impact ejected the passenger from the vehicle and later to a nearby hospital. The driver was trapped in the car fire and died at the scene.
Zampella was a key figure in the creation of Call of Duty. He later left the franchise and founded Respawn in 2010 with fellow developer Jason West. The studio's first game was the critically acclaimed Titanfall, released exclusively by EA for Xbox. The studio later released a sequel, a popular battle royale spin-off, and two highly successful Star Wars action games, Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor.
"It's hard to comprehend now. He was such a powerful figure in the industry that I still can't believe he's gone," Respawn developer Patrick Wren shared on social media.
Respawn was acquired by EA in 2017 and became a key part of the publisher's roster of studios. In 2021, Zampella took over Battlefield and helped the series resurgence with the hugely successful Battlefield 6, which is one of the biggest games of 2025. Meanwhile, the franchise he helped create, Call of Duty, continues to be one of the biggest gaming franchises in the world.
“This is an incredible loss, and our hearts go out to Vince’s family, loved ones, and everyone he touched. Vince’s impact on the video game industry was profound and far-reaching. As a friend, colleague, leader, and creative visionary, his work helped shape the modern game development industry and inspired millions of players and developers around the world. His legacy will continue to shape how games are made and how players communicate with each other for generations to come,” EA said in a statement.
