NEO-1 ground robot: The Ministry of Defense codified a new development for mine clearance

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has codified and approved for operation in the Armed Forces of Ukraine the domestic robotic hardware and software complex NEO-1 for remote search of explosive objects. The development was created specifically at the request of front-line soldiers, taking into account the conditions of modern warfare.

The Ministry of Defense named a number of advantages thanks to which the NEO-1 NRC can be used not only by engineering units of the Ground Forces, but also by any military personnel who need to demine an area:

  • simple and understandable operating algorithm;
  • automatic and manual control modes;
  • built-in video cameras;
  • low operating costs;
  • compact size and weight;
  • modular architecture;
  • the ability to perform logistical missions.

Characteristics of NEO-1

  • Dimensions and weight: the platform measures 85×81×41 cm and weighs about 60 kg, which allows two soldiers to easily load it into the back of a pickup truck or trunk.

  • Driving performance and autonomy: the robot reaches speeds of up to 7 km/h, and the battery charge lasts for 8 hours of continuous operation.

  • Load capacity: in addition to demining, the complex is capable of carrying up to 70 kg of payload or towing a trailer weighing up to 120 kg.

  • Control: the basic range of the remote control is up to 500 m, but optionally the communication range can be increased to 3 km.

  • Optical system: equipped with a night vision camera and a day camera on a 3-axis stabilizer, which provides 10x optical or 3x digital zoom with real-time video transmission to the operator.

The NEO-1 ground robotic complex is equipped with a pulsed wide-format multi-channel metal detector with a scanning width of 139 cm and a detection depth of up to 60 cm. The system supports automatic adjustment to the type of soil, remote control of search channels and a selection mode for screening out small metal debris (fragments, screws). The complex effectively detects ferrous and precious metals, as well as a wide range of ammunition, including OZM-72 mines, MON, TM series anti-tank mines in a metal case, shells and grenades.
