OpenClaw has gained immense popularity in recent weeks thanks to its promise to be «AI that actually gets things done.» Whether it’s managing a calendar, booking flights, or even hanging out on social media for bots.
The project’s previous names were Clawdbot and Moltbot. Steinberger changed the former because Anthropic threatened to sue over its resemblance to Claude, and the latter simply because the developer liked it better.
In a blog post about his decision to join OpenAI, Steinberger noted that while he could probably turn OpenClaw into a huge company, «it doesn’t really excite me.»
«I’m looking to change the world, not build a big company. Teaming up with OpenAI is the fastest way to give this product to everyone,» the Austrian developer said.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman wrote in X that in his new role, Steinberger will «lead the development of the next generation of personal agents.» Regarding OpenClaw, Altman noted that the project «will exist within a dedicated foundation as an open-source initiative that OpenAI will continue to support.»
Recall that previously dev.ua reported on how the OpenClaw AI agent attacked a developer who rejected its code.
