The Security Service of Ukraine has detained two Chinese citizens involved in an attempt to steal secret technical information about the production of the Ukrainian Neptune missile complex. One of the suspects was a former student of a Kyiv university, and the other was his father, who acted in coordination with Chinese special services.
According to the official Telegram channel of the SBU, a 24-year-old Chinese citizen, who was expelled from a Ukrainian university in 2023, was detained while attempting to obtain classified documentation from a Ukrainian citizen who had access to defense developments. He was caught red-handed while transferring the materials.
The suspect established contact with the Ukrainian to obtain technical documentation for the RK-360MC «Neptune» — a complex known for destroying the cruiser «Moskva», the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The coordination of espionage activities from abroad was carried out by the father of the former student, who periodically arrived in Ukraine to transmit instructions and was supposed to transfer the obtained information to the PRC.
As a result of the searches, electronic devices with correspondence confirming the conspiracy and plans to transfer state secrets to foreign intelligence services were seized from the spies. Both defendants were informed of suspicion under Article 114 of the Criminal Code — «espionage». They face up to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.
Why Neptune?
The Neptune missile system has become one of the symbols of Ukrainian defense, in particular, thanks to the strike on the Russian cruiser Moskva in 2022. The system is designed to destroy naval and land targets, and is an extremely valuable object for intelligence of other states. Ukrainian intelligence services are working hard to prevent the leakage of critical military technologies against the backdrop of a full-scale war.
