In a TED interview late last week, Altman said that ChatGPT's user base had doubled in just a few weeks, Fortune reports .
The company has grown rapidly in the past few months. In December, OpenAI hit 300 million weekly active users. In February, the company's weekly active users surpassed 400 million, while paid business users surpassed 2 million.
Altman now says that “about 10% of the world frequently uses our systems,” meaning the number of users is about 800 million.
TED's Chris Anderson said that OpenAI's CEO told him backstage that the company's user base had doubled in just a few weeks.
In March, the company introduced a major update to ChatGPT’s image generation capabilities. A day later, social media feeds were filled with memes in the style of Ghibli, the iconic Japanese animation studio whose founder has previously strongly condemned AI. Due to such popularity, OpenAI postponed the launch of the new product for free users. And only almost a week later did it open access to everyone.
During the interview, Altman was asked about copyright issues when training models and it appears he first raised the idea of sharing revenue with living authors.
“I think it would be cool to find a new model where if you say I want to do something on behalf of some artist and they agree, there would be a revenue model and that’s fine,” he said.
