Duolingo's owl will teach you how to play chess using puzzles

The language learning app Duolingo will soon have a course to help you learn how to play chess. It will help beginners understand the rules and more experienced players hone their skills.

Duolingo will use short puzzles, such as moving a knight to the right spot to practice its L-shaped movement or checkmating a king stuck in a corner, The Verge reports.

Users will be able to play mini-matches or full games against Duolingo character Oscar, who will act as a coach during the lessons. The team’s approach was to «make chess as accessible as possible,» Duolingo product manager Edwin Bodge told the publication. The course will offer lessons for a wide range of skill levels, so people can join it at any level of chess familiarity they already have.

Duolingo hasn’t revealed whether it plans to add similar courses to other games. «We don’t have any plans to share yet, I think we’ll just see how this launch goes and then decide what to do next», — said Sammy Siegel, a staff software engineer at the company.

According to Monica Earl, Duolingo’s PR director, the chess course is launching in beta on iOS in English. She said that in 4–6 weeks, more iOS users will have access to the course, and then it will come to Android, and eventually be available in other languages.

Duolingo is an American educational technology company that produces learning programs and provides language certificates. Duolingo offers courses in 43 languages, including fictional ones like Klingon. The company also offers courses in music, mathematics, and now chess.

Duolingo’s learning method incorporates gamification to motivate users with points, rewards, and interactive lessons that are repeated at regular intervals. The app offers short daily lessons for consistent, step-by-step practice.

Earlier, the head of the Ministry of Digital Affairs, Mykhailo Fedorov, said that the educational application «Mriya» will feature gamification elements that will resemble the functionality of the language learning application Duolingo. Schoolchildren will also be able to earn points for watching educational videos and taking quizzes.
