According to the message of the USF in Telegram, units of the Defense Forces use thousands of drones every month, each of which needs fine-tuning, improvement or repair to fulfill the assigned combat tasks.
«We asked the head of the repair shop of the „Nachtigal“ unit of the 413th OBBS to talk about the peculiarities of the profession, challenges and the skillset necessary for successful work in this position», — said the new branch of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The main tasks of an aircraft mechanical engineer:
Finding the problem. Lay out all the possible options for why it «doesn’t work» and exclude them one by one until you find the real reason.
Maintenance and preparation. Bring the «drone zoo» to the level defined in the subsection as acceptable for operation.
Development. This is not only programming, but also work with hardware, circuitry, 3D modeling and finding the optimal solution to a issue.
«In general, this is a constant search for the most optimal way to solve the problem. There is a lot of creativity here», — USF notes.
According to the head of the repair workshop of the Nachtigal unit, a typical day for an unmanned aerial vehicle mechanical engineer begins with a team meeting in the morning, where everyone discusses their plan, shares what they did or didn’t do, and gets advice from others. Then everyone works in their own direction, depending on their experience and skills.
«There are enough tasks: preparing drones, repairing equipment, making new ones. You definitely won’t have to be sad», — he says.
The military man also told what specializations or areas of education are important for the profession of a mechanical engineer of an aircraft carrier. It:
3D modeling schematics.
Experience with Raspberry Pi, Arduino, etc.
Programming of microcontrollers.
Programming languages: Python, C++ and others.
«That’s just the main thing that comes to mind. In fact, there are many fields, but the most significant thing to learn is the ability to learn and adapt to new tasks», — USF notes.
Over the summer, the Unmanned Systems Force, the world’s first branch of the military to use air, sea, surface and underwater, land-based unmanned and robotic systems in its combat operations, announced how to join their ranks.
Previously, the rapper Oleksandr Yarmak, who serves in the USF, in an interview with the «Radio Hartiya» YouTube channel, talked about which recruits join this type of army.
