Dry statistics instead of loud headlines: a Ukrainian IT expert created a dashboard "What's in the swamps" to analyze the Russian Federation's resistance to war in numbers
Startup mentor, IT marketer, and Chief Growth Officer at miltech company Dwarf Engineering, Maksym Zubenko, developed and launched a static dashboard with public metrics of Russia's resilience to war under the telling title "What's Up in the Swamps." The main goal of the project is to show the real financial and social condition of the aggressor in the language of dry statistics.
"The idea arose from a simple need to provide a comprehensive picture and at least slightly reduce the level of general despair. The task was to stop reacting to manipulative news headlines every day, and instead start tracking the financial and social stresses of the Russian Federation quantitatively. In numbers, not in emotions," Maksym Zubenko told dev.ua.
"What's in the swamps" is a static dashboard with public metrics of the Russian Federation's resilience to war.
According to the author, the platform's capabilities are intentionally minimized, because its value lies precisely in the convenient consolidation of scattered data into a single context.
“It’s just a convenient way to bring together numbers in one place that only begin to give real context when they work together,” explains Maksym Zubenko.
The dashboard structure is built on several key principles:
all data is clearly divided into three categories - "Money", "Society" and "Army";
the main analytical tool of the platform, which reflects the system stress level from 100 points (the conditional norm of pre-war 2019) to 0 (complete collapse);
The project was implemented as a static site on the Vercel platform without using a backend.
The dashboard is updated once a month as fresh data appears in the public space.
The role of artificial intelligence in development
The technical part of the project was implemented in a short time thanks to modern technologies. The dashboard was completely assembled using Claude artificial intelligence.
At the same time, Maksym Zubenko emphasizes that writing the code was not the main challenge in this project: "The most difficult task was not development, but collecting all the metrics under one simple criterion: they must be publicly available and difficult to fake."
AI now remains a reliable assistant to developers in their daily routine. It automatically parses fresh statistical data from large PDF reports, helps create relevant text descriptions for graphs, and additionally validates figures before publishing.
Plans
The developer does not plan to scale or develop the project.
The author notes that he plans to add new metrics if they meet the reliability criteria, but there is only one global plan.
“No [development plans]. I want to keep this dashboard until the war ends and I can forget about it forever,” concludes Maksym Zubenko.
