Creating a tool that allowed job candidates to cheat in technical interviews set off a chain of events that eventually led to Lee being expelled from Columbia University, Business Insider reports. But he believes that soon everyone will be using AI to get ahead.
Cluely’s AI product has already evolved from a tool for cheating in interviews to a cheat assistant everywhere, including in live chat. For example, the app’s promotional video shows Lee using it on a date.
«There is a very, very scary and rapidly growing gap between people who use AI and people who oppose it. We say ‘cheat everywhere’ because, ironically, we believe that this is the only path to a truly just future», — Lee said in a comment to BI.
He believes that just because someone uses AI to cheat in interviews doesn’t mean they’re cheating. It’s just «how people will act and think in the future», Lee says.
He says that in the coming years, interviews will become much more «holistic,» and will mostly be about assessing whether a candidate is a «cultural fit» rather than focusing on deep dives into their skills. That is, if the interview as an assessment tool is to survive at all, he expects AI to become powerful enough to create individual profiles for each candidate and relay that information to the interviewer.
«I already know all the work you’ve done, or at least the AI already knows what work you’ve done. It knows how good it is. It knows what skills you have, and if they match, then I can match you with a job, assuming we find common ground after a 30-minute conversation», — said the Cluely founder.
He added that this practice has already become commonplace at Cluely, where he said interviews tend to be less formal.
Lee expects that artificial intelligence will eventually change more than just the interview — he believes that soon everyone will be using it as often and as widely as possible.
«The whole way of thinking will change. Every thought I have is based on the information I have at this moment. But what happens when the information I have is not just what’s in my brain, but everything humanity has ever collected and put on the internet, ever?», — asks Chungin «Roy» Lee.
He believes that when AI literally helps people think in real time, the entire way they interact with each other, with the world, will be changed.
With Cluely, Lee hopes to accustom people to what he believes is an inevitable transformation. The startup was previously reported to have managed to amass about 70,000 users and attract $5.3 million in investment.
Recently, Emily DeJo, an associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business and an expert on AI communication and etiquette, said that AI interviews are likely to become more common as companies look to streamline and automate the early stages of recruiting.
