AI startup Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI executives, is nearing a new deal to raise an additional $2 billion, which would raise the company's market valuation to $60 billion. And this comes just months after receiving $4 billion in funding from Amazon.
The funding round is led by venture capital firm Lightspeed Venture Partners, Reuters reported , citing sources who spoke on condition of anonymity.
So these two investments, totaling $6 billion, will significantly boost Anthropic's market valuation. Last year, the startup was valued at about $18 billion. Its annual revenue is about $875 million.
Developing large language models requires expensive computing as well as top talent.
Late last year, Amazon doubled its investment in the startup to $8 billion to compete in the AI market. The last $4 billion, provided by Amazon in the form of convertible bonds, will be converted into equity as part of this round.
In 2023, Anthropic also received $2 billion in investment from Alphabet.
