UX/UI Designer Ivan Pokazka noticed that employers are increasingly interested in whether candidates have a deferral. This outraged the specialist, and his post sparked a discussion on LinkedIn.
«Don’t you have a deferment? You’re trash… This is how I perceive a candidate’s rejection at an interview when the company finds out that he doesn’t have a deferment or grounds for one. This is not the first time I’ve noticed such a trend in companies both in the domestic market and in international ones. Is business not ready to take responsibility? Is this a new filter in society? It seems like it’s time to write in your profile header: „I HAVE A DEFERMENT“ if you want to work and eat…», Ivan expressed himself emotionally.
According to him, employers are not asking about the presence of a military registration document, but rather about the presence of a deferment or the right to it.
Fifty experts commented on his post. Not everyone agrees with the writer’s rhetoric.
Product Manager and veteran Oleksandr Kucheryavyi ironically says: «I read the comments. My heart aches for those who „have no armor“. I’m almost in tears. What the hell is going on, people! Where can those who „have no armor“ go? There’s NO way out for them! How long will we tolerate this? There’s no more urine! Who will employers hire then, because there are only those who „have armor“ and those who don’t. * sad music is playing that evokes longing and confusion.»
«These are potential risks and additional costs for the company. There is nothing here except business. When did business want to take on risks and costs that it can avoid?» says Back-end Developer Volodymyr Lutsak.
Head of Customer Care Salavat Valiullin said that he encountered this at an interview with Ukrtelecom, DTEK, Fozi, and Nova Poshta. «After HR introduced himself, there were two questions: how much do you want to earn and are there paper documents and a deferral?» the specialist said.
«The indignation is understandable, but let’s look at the situation from another perspective. The market is overcrowded with candidates, the company can afford to choose. Well… taking a candidate without „armor“ is a risk. Because now there is a candidate, resources are spent on his onboarding, and a month later the candidate has failed to find a job (unfortunately, such are the realities). In order for a company to take such a risk, it needs to be balanced somehow, otherwise it will simply be more profitable for the company to take a more „safe“ candidate. You can balance it with good skills, unique abilities, etc.,» Dmitry Khandzhanov, Frontend Developer, argues for this behavior of employers.
At the same time, Fullstack Developer Misha Kompanets, who has a deferment and is in Spain, complains that many of the vacancies that suit him have a requirement to be in Ukraine. «And what surprises me even more is that many vacancies require presence in the office. Apparently, rockets and drones do not bother employers too much. And I did not feel any advantage from the deferment at all. They never even asked about it in social services,» he says.
«As the times go, so do the vacancies…» The developer posted a vacancy in which the employer, offering very little money, noted: «Instead of mobilization, remote work»
«The idea of becoming an AI model seemed interesting — I’d seen celebrities doing it on social media.» A 23-year-old British woman sold her face to an AI startup, and now she’s worried about the consequences
«It was my mistake that I didn’t ask, but simply closed my eyes to the things I saw.» The aspiring designer told how she quit her IT company the very next day after leaving. Here’s why she made such a decision
