The Collins British Dictionary has named the word of the year 2025 as “vibecoding.” What other words have made it into the shortlist?
"Vibecoding" was one of 10 words on a shortlist that reflect the mood, language and main themes of 2025, writes the BBC.
Recall that the term “vibecoding” was coined in February by OpenAI co-founder Andrey Karpaty. He created the name to explain how artificial intelligence allows programmers to “forget about the existence of code” and completely “trust the vibe” when developing a program.
Not all of the words on the list necessarily first appeared in 2025, but Collins decided that this was the year they became popular. Among them, for example, the word clanker, a term used to describe robots in the Star Wars movies and games since the mid-2000s, made the list after going viral on TikTok in July. This happened thanks to people sharing their frustrations with AI-powered machines.
Also shortlisted were:
- aura farming is an activity that people engage in solely to look cool, often knowing they are being filmed. The term was first used in January 2024, but its popularity has grown significantly throughout 2025;
- "broligarchy" became popular in 2024 to describe the owners of the world's largest technology companies and their alleged political influence. It was used frequently in 2025 after many of these executives appeared at the inauguration of US President Donald Trump;
- biohacking — an activity aimed at changing the natural processes of one's own body in an attempt to improve health and increase lifespan;
- coolcation — vacation/holiday in a place with a cool climate;
- glaze — to praise or flatter someone excessively and undeservedly;
- henry is an abbreviation for "high earner, not rich yet", or a person who has not accumulated significant wealth, despite his high income;
- taskmasking is an activity aimed at creating a false impression of one's productivity in the workplace.
