The European Union is making a serious attempt to break free from the influence of American tech giants. The new W Social platform, which is already available in beta, focuses on a bot-free ecosystem, strict user verification, and personal data protection according to European standards.
What is W Social?
The project, which has been developed over the past few months, is positioned as a «social network with a human face,» writes the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita.
Unlike algorithmic «bubbles» like Meta or X, W Social focuses on verified interactions. The developers promise that the network will:
No bots. One of the main features of the platform is a verification system through uploading a user’s photo. This should permanently solve the problem of fake accounts that fill competitive services.
All data will be hosted on European servers, which guarantees compliance with GDPR regulations and protection from third-party interference.
The new Trends feature uses AI to analyze public discussions in real time, with the goal of helping users step outside their information bubbles and see the topics that are truly shaping the global agenda.
Who is behind the project?
The platform is led by Swiss law professor Anna Zeiter, who previously worked on privacy and AI issues at eBay. She is joined by a team of experts from Sweden.
The seriousness of the intentions is confirmed by the presence of top-level European institutions on the platform. In particular, the European Central Bank has already published the first posts, and its President Christine Lagarde emphasized the importance of Europe’s technological autonomy in the financial and communications spheres.
European regulators are currently waging an active fight against major players such as TikTok, Meta, and X, accusing them of spreading misinformation and «baiting» users on unhealthy algorithms.
«In a time when algorithms are fragmenting society, we need a platform built on trust and transparency,» note the founders of W Social.
The platform was presented at the Brussels Press Club Europe. Although the developers have involved world leaders and international organizations in the project, the main challenge for W Social is not only technical, but also user-friendly.
