Duolingo CEO Louis von Ahn shared his vision for the future of education. He believes that artificial intelligence will transform schools, but will not replace teachers anytime soon.
«Education will change. It’s just much easier to teach with AI than with teachers,» the head of Duolingo was quoted as saying by Business Insider.
This doesn’t mean teachers will disappear, he says. He believes schools will remain, but their function could change dramatically. Von Ahn believes schools could increasingly serve as childcare centers and controlled environments, while AI will do much of the actual teaching.
«It doesn’t mean teachers will disappear. You still need people to take care of students. I also don’t think schools will disappear because you still need childcare,» he said.
Louis von Ahn believes that in a classroom of 30 students, it is difficult for a single teacher to offer everyone personalized, adaptive learning. AI, instead, will be able to track individual performance in real time and adjust the difficulty of the lesson depending on how well each student is learning the material.
The Duolingo CEO said that since education is changing slowly, this transformation could take many years. However, he believes that in the future, AI will complement or even replace some of formal education, especially in countries that need scalable educational solutions quickly.
It was previously reported that language learning app Duolingo will gradually stop using contractors to do work that artificial intelligence can handle.
Recall that in April, Deputy Prime Minister for Digital Transformation of Ukraine Mykhailo Fedorov announced new features that will appear in the educational application «Mriya». Some of them use the capabilities of artificial intelligence, in particular, in the generation of tests based on teacher material.
