As Notebookcheck reports, the trademark filing shows that the company plans to create a full-fledged cellular network without terrestrial infrastructure. The system will transmit 5G signals directly from space to ordinary smartphones and IoT devices. This approach is in line with SpaceX founder Elon Musk’s vision of creating a new type of global mobile network.
Leading microelectronics manufacturers have already supported the technical implementation of the project. Qualcomm and MediaTek are developing specialized modems for direct satellite communication in future smartphone models. This will allow devices to connect to the satellite network without additional equipment.
SpaceX plans to begin launching V3 satellites on Starship V3 rockets in 2026. Each satellite will have 20 times the capacity of the current generation satellites. The company has already filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to launch 15,000 Direct-to-Cell V3 satellites.
According to SpaceX forecasts, Starlink Mobile will begin providing services in 2027. The system will provide users anywhere in the world with download speeds of up to 100 Mbps. SpaceX’s entry into the mobile communications market will create direct competition for traditional terrestrial operators.
