SpaceX has officially announced the acquisition of startup xAI. According to Bloomberg, the combined company is valued at $1.25 trillion. SpaceX is reportedly preparing for an initial public offering (IPO) as early as June this year with a share price of about $527 per share.
According to Elon Musk, the current development of artificial intelligence depends on huge land-based data centers that require enormous amounts of energy and cooling. Global power grids simply cannot meet this demand in the near future without harming the environment and people.
According to Musk, using constant solar energy in orbit will allow for scaling computing power without the operating costs inherent to Earth. The world's richest man predicts that in 2–3 years, the cheapest way to generate calculations for AI will be in space.
“I estimate that within 2-3 years, the cheapest way to compute AI will be using space technology. The cost-effectiveness alone will allow innovative companies to move forward in training their AI models and processing data at unprecedented speed and scale, accelerating breakthroughs in our understanding of physics and inventing technologies for the benefit of humanity,” Musk said.
SpaceX is relying on its super-heavy Starship rocket to make the plan a reality. The new rocket will be able to lift 200 tons in a single flight, with launches every hour. This will allow it to deliver millions of tons of equipment into orbit every year.
According to Musk's calculations, launching a million tons of satellites per year, where each ton generates 100 kW of computing power, would add 100 GW of capacity for AI annually.
“Elementary mathematical calculations show that launching a million tons of satellites per year, generating 100 kW of computing power per ton, would add 100 GW of AI computing power annually, without ongoing operation and maintenance needs. Ultimately, we could launch 1 TW/year from Earth,” Elon Musk calculated.
Last year, Elon Musk already pulled off the trick of buying companies from himself. Then, the AI company xAI acquired the social network X, both of which are owned by Musk.
