This acquisition is a key step for Elon Musk in the fight against the main competitors in the artificial intelligence market - OpenAI and Anthropic PBC.
Musk's AI arm (formerly known as xAI, now under the SpaceXAI umbrella) has struggled to commercialize its business after a series of layoffs and restructurings. The Cursor acquisition is set to dramatically change that dynamic.
The Cursor team will have access to SpaceX's vast computing power and advanced GPU resources.
"We will gain access to the largest GPU fleet in the world. This will give us the computing power to create stronger and more economical models," Cursor noted.
Cursor, a startup founded in 2023, has developed an AI assistant that helps programmers write and debug code. The service has become one of the fastest-growing startups in history and a key player in the so-called vibecoding era, when developers create complex programs simply by texting prompts to a chatbot. The deal made Cursor’s founders billionaires.
Despite the fact that the deal has only just been closed, the companies have already released the first joint products: Grok 4.5 (July), Grok Bot, and Grok 4.6.
Despite the fact that SpaceX earns billions by renting out its computing resources to giants like Google and Anthropic, Elon Musk emphasizes the importance of its own software.
During an August meeting with SpaceX employees, the billionaire stated that artificial intelligence is the present and future of the company, and made an extremely bold prediction.
“Our AI revenue will exceed all other SpaceX revenue by September,” Elon Musk emphasized.
