SpaceX may force Ukraine to pay hundreds of times more for satellite communications. Why is the military at risk of price increases?

This scenario is described by The Atlantic, whose journalists spoke with American and Ukrainian officials, military personnel, and satellite communications experts.
The Ukrainian military is already using both regular Starlink and its military counterpart, Starshield. But the scale is completely different. According to The Atlantic, Starshield accounts for less than 1% of terminals in the combat zone.
In addition, regular Starlink can be quickly purchased and installed where communication is needed. However, Starshield, created specifically for defense purposes, is supplied mainly through government contracts and in limited quantities.
SpaceX has already been raising prices for the military. In May, Reuters reported that SpaceX was demanding more money from the Pentagon for satellite communications for LUCAS strike drones, which the United States has used against Iran. Initially, communications for one such drone cost about $5,000 per month. However, SpaceX said that the military should pay the more expensive aviation rate - already $25,000.
American officials objected: in their opinion, the tariff for aircraft should not be applied to drones, which need the Internet only for a few minutes or hours of flight. However, according to Reuters, the Pentagon eventually agreed to the price increase. Musk himself called the agency's report false.
Earlier, dev.ua wrote that Elon Musk accused the Ukrainian military of using regular Starlink for drone strikes, which, according to him, violates SpaceX rules. Presidential advisor on defense technologies Sergey "Flash" Beskrestnov denied the accusations. He explained that commercial Starlink terminals have technical limitations that prevent them from being used for medium- and long-range strikes.
