Elon Musk’s SpaceX company said it had lost control of a Starlink satellite, which began falling to Earth from an altitude of more than 400 km after «experiencing an anomaly».
The Verge notes that the sudden loss of communication, a drop in altitude, «a release of air from the fuel tank,» and «the release of a small number of tracked objects at low relative speeds» suggest that this anomaly was some kind of explosion.
SpaceX says the situation poses no threat to the ISS crew and the satellite will burn up in the atmosphere «within a few weeks.»
«As the world’s largest operator of satellite constellations, we are deeply committed to safety in space. We take such events seriously. Our engineers are working quickly to identify the root cause and eliminate the source of the anomaly and are already implementing software in our devices that increases protection against such events,» SpaceX assured.
This accident occurred a week after SpaceX reported that one of its Starlink satellites almost collided with a Chinese satellite.
