Starting in 2027, Steam plans to completely abandon the current system of discounts and sales and switch to dynamic personalized offers.
The company announced this at Steamworks.
Instead of the same selections for all users, Steam wants to show discounted games based on a specific person’s interests. The company explains that it has been testing dynamic and personalized recommendations for the past few months instead of some of the curated selections.
According to Steam, this approach allowed users to be shown in the "Discounts and Events" section 10x more games per day. The company also saw an increase in store page visits, wishlist additions, and cart additions.
Steam believes that the current system of a manually managed promotion calendar is not very suitable due to the diversity of user preferences. Therefore, instead of general offers, the store wants to show more games that may be interesting to a specific user.
At the same time, discounts will not be limited to a fixed number of places on the main page and in other sections of Steam. More games with discounts will have the opportunity to get into recommendations.
Steam has not yet announced an exact launch date for the new system. The company is still working on the details, but warns that the current system will completely cease operation in early 2027.
Steam is also preparing new tools for developers that will allow them to manage discounts and sales within the new system.
