Almost two years after the release of STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl, it finally received its first major story expansion, along with a massive update to version 2.0. The game received many improvements, brought back old features from previous games in the series, and most importantly, expanded the story of the Zone and Skif. After a few hours of marathon play, dev.ua shares its impressions of the updated STALKER and answers the question: does the "Price of Hope" expansion really bring players back to the Zone?

Almost two years after the release of STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl, it finally received its first major story expansion, along with a massive update to version 2.0. The game received many improvements, brought back old features from previous games in the series, and most importantly, expanded the story of the Zone and Skif. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 version 2.0.

Before talking about the story addition, it is worth talking in detail about the 2.0 update - it feels like you are entering a remaster of the game of your childhood. Somehow you imagined it like that, although in reality it looked far from attractive at the release. Despite the fact that "Stalker 2" was released only two years ago and many fans still continue to play it - this update really creates, if not the feeling of a remaster, then the impression of an Enhanced Edition, as was once the case with the EE versions of the original trilogy.

Let's start with the technical aspects: GSC began development of the game on Unreal Engine version 4, and in the process ported the project to version 5.1 with custom deep modifications of individual systems. Since 5.1 was a relatively early sub-version of a major engine update, many of the stability and optimization issues with Stalker were more in the engine version than in the game itself.

Back in 2025, the development team published a roadmap promising to port the game to a newer, more stable version of the engine. However, this task probably turned out to be more difficult than it seemed at first glance, so the release of the update was delayed by as much as half a year.

So what's so interesting about this update and is it worth all the effort? Let's find out.

Let's start with the optimization, which was probably the main reason for porting the game to the new version of the engine. The game really runs much smoother than before. The frame rate is slightly higher on average than in patch version 1.9, hubs no longer drop the number of frames by half, and walking around the open world no longer causes sharp drops in fps "out of nowhere". The difference in performance is especially noticeable at 1080p and 2K resolutions, while in 4K the indicators changed by only a few frames per second.

However, it is worth noting that the developers did not leave the "liberated" performance to waste. From now on, players will be treated to a completely redesigned vegetation system.

There are significantly more trees in the Zone, and they themselves have become larger and more expressive on average. But the grass stands out the most. There is a lot of it, as well as its variations. The Zone now really looks abandoned and overgrown. So much so that in some frames it seems too alive. We hasten to assure you: this does not harm the atmosphere of the game, because now there are more clearly expressed "biomes" with different types and conditions of vegetation. Somewhere it is lush, and somewhere it is dying - such is life in the Zone.

In addition to the vegetation, the lighting system has also been redesigned. The sun's rays have become more noticeable in the open space, while the light inside is brighter and softer. The transition between the street and the interior has also become smoother and more natural.

Another new addition is the updated weather and cloud conditions. You can expect thick fog, light rain, and improved anomalous energy release effects.

In addition to the visual component, the patch also brings something to the game that was missing from the release.

For example, the new difficulty level "Your Rules" allows you to customize the threats to your own preferences. Who to fear more - stalkers or mutants - the choice is yours.

Speaking of humans and mutants, it's worth mentioning a major update to the A-Life life simulation system. Stalkers are now inhabiting even more camp locations throughout the Zone, which in turn can cause even more conflicts and clashes between enemy factions.

It's best to observe such events from a distance, which is finally where the long-awaited binoculars will help us. Many fans were disappointed that the tool familiar to the original trilogy became unavailable in the sequel. Patch 2.0 corrects this misunderstanding by adding several of their varieties at once, which differ in both price and functionality.

Of course, the update did not ignore weapons: four new weapons will be added to the Zone: Arev, GP3A, SKP, and Fora-230 will expand the already solid arsenal.

Another surprise is the subspecies of already known mutants, which are also tied to their biomes. So don't be surprised if you encounter radioactive blind dogs or slightly modified bloodsuckers in the middle of the Zone - it's only a matter of time.

Well, if this list is still not enough for you, the game map has also been expanded somewhat, and some small locations have become available for exploration here and there. We won't reveal which ones in advance - try to find them yourself.

The Price of Hope (no spoilers)

As for the DLC itself, at the time of writing this text, the author has reached the first "watershed" of the story. Since the story of the add-on runs parallel to the main plot, it is not recommended to rush through all the new content at once. However, the developers have provided several variations of the start:

  1. For players who want to complete only "The Price of Hope", there is a save option available after Scyth leaves the Small Zone, where the quest will automatically start and a recap of the main events of STALKER 2 will be shown before it begins;
  2. You can also start playing from your own save, but keep in mind that at a certain point the quest progress will stop if the player does not complete the "Signal" mission first;
  3. The option recommended by the developers and us is to start a new game. There are so many changes in the game that believe me it will be worth it, especially if you haven't played STALKER 2 after patch 1.3.

Among the new locations available exclusively in "The Price of Hope" are Zalizny Lis, Limansk and ChNPP. Let's talk in detail about the first location, which the game designers filled with an incredible number of traversal puzzles. This part of the Zone feels very vertical compared to the previous ones: the amount of "bribe" hidden somewhere on top of the ubiquitous power lines is simply incredible. The only problem is that moving up is often very inconvenient, because the movement mechanics of STALKER 2 were not sharpened to be similar to Assassin's Creed. Skifu in the original game is not much of a parkourist, and here he is even less so, so just accept it as a fact that you will see the death screen due to a fall often. But there is also a plus - in most cases such active traversal is optional.

As for the story and characters of "The Price of Hope," there are only positives so far. The story is intriguing and interesting, the actors play well without exaggeration, but sometimes you want more expression and emotion from actress Maria Stopnyk, who plays Mavka in the play, rather than constant Anglicisms.

It is also worth noting the appearance in the game of members of the Ukrainian music scene, who voiced several characters in the game, and we are not talking about Pavel Zibrov and Kateryna Pavlenko . We will not reveal who exactly we mean, but we will say that the artists fit perfectly into the entourage of the groups they represent.

Technically, the cutscenes have become more refined: the transitions from gameplay to cinematics are much smoother, and new lighting adds depth to the scenes. More detail has also been added to the faces of all characters, including secondary ones, and new types of scars, blemishes, and other natural skin imperfections have appeared, which adds to the realism.

Of course, there were technical anomalies. In unstaged cutscenes, characters' hands often fall through the textures of other objects. In some plot moments, it seems that the animations were not done at all, for example, when Mavka presses the button to open the door. Sometimes NPCs talk to the wall, and not to the main character and other characters. And all of this described happened literally in one mission in the space of five minutes.

There are some issues with the level of detail in the new binoculars, where instead of a good environment, you can see just one low-polygonal landscape mass. New weapons cannot be sold to the Junkyard in a damaged state, and their inventory models have a different contrast than the rest of the weapons. There are also some old issues, such as characters suddenly turning white. However, in general, these issues are minor and will be resolved by further polishing the game in future patches and do not affect the gameplay experience in any way.

Overall, after the first few hours of STALKER 2: Cost of Hope, it's safe to say that GSC Game World has done a great job of fixing the bugs. The game has become better, bigger, and more like we all wanted it to be at release, and even more. So now is the best time to return to the Zone and unravel its new mysteries.
