"US President Donald Trump believes that the emergence and popularity of the Chinese AI platform DeepSeek will only save money for American tech giants," Reuters writes , citing its own sources.
The American president expressed this idea during a meeting with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang at the White House on Friday, January 31.
The meeting came as the US seeks to further restrict exports of artificial intelligence chips to ensure that advanced computing power remains in America and among its allies, while seeking new ways to block China's access to it.
A source familiar with the meeting said the meeting was planned before DeepSeek became popular. Talks between Trump officials about restricting shipments of advanced chips, including Nvidia, to China are in the early stages, the sources said. A similar idea has been under consideration since the Joe Biden administration.
The H20 chips can be used to run artificial intelligence software and were designed specifically for the Chinese market to comply with existing US restrictions on shipments to China imposed by Biden.
