“You close the door, and it climbs through the window.” Ukrainian IT professionals discuss how Russians are squeezing into their information bubble on LinkedIn
UX/UI Designer Olga Lipetska raised the topic of communicating with representatives of an enemy state on the professional social network LinkedIn.
UX/UI Designer Olga Lipetska raised the topic of communicating with representatives of an enemy state on the professional social network LinkedIn.
«In recent days, I have been observing a trend that my feed has become more frequent with posts from representatives of country 404. And this is considering the fact that I am quite careful about the process of adding people as friends (I check the page, work, etc.). And today again… A Senior product manager writes that he is looking for a job… writes in Russian… writes that he is in Serbia… and he is in my feed…», the IT professional says in her post.
According to her, these posts appear in the feed through the social network’s algorithms when several of her contacts like the relevant posts.
«And I have a question — are these people who so zealously support this lover of the „Russian world“ simply inattentive and thoughtlessly like all posts or are they also hidden „lovers“? Although I wouldn’t say that about some of them… Friends, please don’t drag those who don’t belong there into your infospace and the infospace of your environment with likes and reposts,» the designer expresses indignation and addresses the Ukrainian IT community.
Olga Lipetska’s post was supported by many other IT activists who share her position.
«When such situations occur, I simply silently delete contacts who like and repost, and that’s it,» says Cloud Architect Serhiy S.
«Unfortunately, it is not always possible to determine from a profile whether a person is adequate or whether another „what difference“ has happened. That’s why it turns out that way,» said DevOps Engineer Svyatoslav Kozak .
Chief Marketing Officer at Osavul Andriy Bevz claims that this also happens due to automated functions.
«Couldn’t these people just launch an auto-connect with people in a certain industry and auto-like their post? That’s how they got those people in their feed. LinkedIn is very automated in terms of connections. Especially for sales people,» he suggested.
«I didn’t see it in myself until I scrolled through a couple more posts under yours. And I came across a post from a Russian that a recruiter from Kyiv, who is in my contacts, liked. Well. It means that we need to clean our contacts too, because if they like everything indiscriminately, then we’re not on the right track,» says Operations/Project Manager Kateryna Skichko .
«Judging by everything, it’s a mass phenomenon. Just yesterday, I made a minus four. Interestingly, all 4 were egg-laying,» noted business analyst Oleksiy Syvolapenko .
«Basically, it turns out that the common contacts are recruiters who have added Russians to their contacts and like such posts. They are probably misled by the fact that they indicate another country. And for some reason, places of work and education are not checked before adding to contacts, but as practice shows, it is there that you can see where they are really from,» concludes Customer Success Manager Oleksandr K.
As dev.ua reported, LinkedIn has created two AI tools: Jobs Match for candidates and an AI agent for recruiters and HR professionals. Both are free, meaning you don’t need to be a paid LinkedIn user to use the basic version of these tools.
