The incident occurred on Taras Shevchenko Boulevard during curfew: municipal security patrol officers stopped a young man on an electric scooter and suspected him of being drunk.
As reported in the Telegram channel of the Municipal Guard, the man smelled strongly of alcohol. The police were called to the scene, and the breathalyzer showed 0.56 ppm. The offender was charged under Art. 130 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses, which provides for a fine of at least 17 thousand hryvnias.
According to the law, electric scooters are vehicles, and therefore their drivers are responsible in the same way as motorists. Driving while intoxicated can result in a fine and even a loss of driving privileges.
Similar cases have already occurred in Kyiv and other cities. In Kharkiv last year, police recorded several incidents with drunk scooter riders, and in Odessa in 2024, a court considered a case where a driver was fined for a similar violation. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the number of such offenses is growing along with the popularity of rental services.
Law enforcement officers emphasize that even a small electric scooter in the hands of a drunk driver poses a danger to other road users, and the sanctions for violations are almost identical to those that apply to car drivers.
We previously wrote about how Daniel Tonkopiy, CEO of Ukrainian electric bike manufacturer Delfast, declared that the micromobility boom is over. He provided many arguments to support this theory.
