In order to expand digital control over its citizens, Russia plans to introduce a so-called «single user identifier» for all Internet platforms.
This was reported on social networks by the Center for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council.
According to the Central Data Protection Agency, such an identifier in Russia is planned to be made immutable and tied to a phone number.
Officially, this is supposedly planned to be done for «accurate audience calculation» of Internet resources.
«Officially, this is explained by the desire for transparent statistics and convenience for the advertising market. The Ministry of Digital Affairs assures that the data will be depersonalized and transmitted in encrypted form,» the Central Data Protection Agency notes.
Instead, according to the CPD, this is another step towards total digital control.
«An immutable ID tied to a phone number actually creates a single digital profile of a person — with the ability to track their activity in social networks, media, online cinemas, and other services. Under the guise of „business convenience,“ a model of a „digital Gulag“ is being built in the Russian Federation, where every click can be linked to a specific person,» the Center noted.
Meanwhile, WhatsApp has complained about restrictions on its service in Russia, accusing the authorities of trying to deprive more than 100 million Russians of the right to private correspondence ahead of the holiday season.
