In Europe, Chinese online shopping app Temu could be fined up to 6% of its total global annual turnover for selling illegal goods and violating the Digital Services Act.
As reported on the European Commission’s website, the latter has previously acknowledged that Temu violated its obligations under the Digital Services Act (DSA) and failed to properly take into account the risks of the distribution of illegal products on its marketplace.
To provide evidence of illegal goods being sold on the platform, mystery shopping was conducted at the request of the European Commission, which showed that consumers shopping on Temu were likely to find non-compliant products among the offers. In particular, these were children’s toys and small electronics.
The European Commission will also continue its investigation into other suspicions regarding the Chinese app, which were launched back in October 2024. In particular, regarding Temu’s use of design features that cause addiction among consumers.
The European Commission’s investigation against Temu is being conducted jointly with national digital services authorities, customs authorities and market surveillance authorities.
dev.ua wrote back in November last year that Temu could face a similar record fine.
With his new tariffs, Trump has cut off Americans from access to super-cheap goods from China. For Temu, this is a possible loss of over 180 million consumers, and for the US, such a change could cost up to $13 billion annually.
