The company launched a new AI training and data labeling division, Scaled Solutions, which is described as a platform of "analysts, testers and independent data operators".
According to the website, Scaled Solutions has begun serving other companies that also need high-quality data sets. Customers include Aurora Innovation Inc., an Uber-backed firm that develops software for self-driving commercial trucks, and Niantic Inc., developer of the Pokémon Go game, Bloomberg writes .
The ride-sharing giant has extensive experience hiring contractors, as it has for years with drivers and couriers. Now the company is betting that it can help other companies get qualified IT professionals.
To that end, Uber in November began recruiting multi-skill contractors in India, the US, Canada, Poland and Nicaragua. Earnings will be determined for each completed task and paid monthly.
The company also has openings for account managers in San Francisco, New York and Chicago, who will manage Uber's relationship with Scaled Solutions' enterprise customers.
